Hire inclusive bikes at the Strawberry Line Cycle Project
The Strawberry Line Cycle Project is based at Yatton railway station. The project offers a not-for-profit cycle hire. You can ride along the beautiful Somerset countryside along the Strawberry Line.
Anyone for Strawberries and… Cheese?
The Strawberry Line is the nickname of the former Cheddar Valley Line, as the railway used to carry strawberries from Cheddar. It could have been called the Cheese Line, but that would have been too cheesy 🙂
The former railway has been converted to a cycle/walking/wheeling path. New sections of the path are being constructed. Due to this, websites report varying lengths of the line, with most reporting that it is approximately 10 miles long. The Strawberry Line is going to form part of the Somerset Circle, which will be an 88-mile long circuit of Bristol, Bath, the Mendips, the Somerset Levels and the coast.
It’s not “Wheely” long
I walked along the Strawberry Line from Sandford to Congresbury several times while participating in Walk to Remember 2025. I even rode an adult kick scooter along this branch, and ended up with dusty trousers. According to the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans), the surface of the Strawberry Line is “55.7% Unsealed firm, 22.2% Asphalt, 22.1% Unsealed loose”. This means that route can get very dusty on a hot summer’s day when you’re riding a bike, so you may find it useful to wear a face mask. I saw many family groups taking advantage of the Strawberry Line Cycle Project Bike hire during the summer.
Inclusive bike hire
I popped in briefly to the Strawberry Line Cycle Project recently. They told me that they mainly hire out their inclusive bikes every Wednesday for their Inclusive Cycling drop-in session. This means that I should be fine to hire out one of their inclusive bikes on a Friday or a Saturday when I am caring for my relative nearby.
The Strawberry Line Cycle Project has a range of inclusive bikes:
vanRaam Rear Steer Adaptive Tandem
Pashley Trikes
E-handcycle
A wheelchair accessible bike (vanRaam Velo Plus)
A wheelchair tandem bike
Jorvik E-trike
Tomcat child’s trike
ICE Recumbent Trike
I’ve not ridden an ICE recumbent trike before, so that is definitely the one that I am aiming to try.
Training for people with learning disabilities
The Strawberry Line Project also offers people with learning disabilities employment and training. In addition to this, the Project runs the Strawberry Line Café. So, it’s well worth spending a whole day exploring everything that the Strawberry Line has to offer.
